A unique happening at Nörvenich Air Base: the Israeli Air Force (IAF) arrived for BlueWings 2020, a joint exercise together with the German Air Force. This marked the first time that IAF fighters landed on German soil and it is the only international event for the IAF this year.
First, KC-130H Hercules 522 arrived. This bird had a nasty accident in 2019, but she’s alive and thriving. Not long after the Herc, a higly modified Gulfstream 550 arrived, registration 569. It is hardly recognizable that this bulky warthog once was a sleek bizzjet.
Then, a couple of Eurofighters took off and the first Boeing KC-707 came in sight, followed by three F-16C Baracks. After the flyby the F-16 got in a formation with the German Eurofighters and did a pass over the field. A tactical break followed and the first three Israeli F-16s landed safely. The Eufis both did a (sneak) low pass and landed afterwards.
The big Boeing 707, callsign GIANT1, came back in sight. With a lot of smoke and noise she did a pass over the base, followed by three F-16Ds. The twin-seat F-16s with the big spines landed and also the 707 gracefully descended into the airbase. In the background the second 707 was already visible. She turned in for final as well, but perfomed a powerfull go-around. After that she landed as well.
After all landings it was time to drive to the other side of the base. Three Eurofighters blasted to the skies right above our heads! We walked a bit further to the cornfields and waited for the 707s to take off. First, another Gulfstream V came into sight in formation with three Eurofighters. The tactical break was performed right in front of us and the Gulf soared over our heads.
When they all had landed it was time for the first 707 to take the skies again. A loud rumble indicated that she had started her take off roll. At rotation she came in sight and she immediately banked left. The second 707 taxied out 30 minutes later and she as well took off, but, without banking.. She screamed loudly and came straight over our heads. What a beautiful sight!
