Bipartisan push to have Malka Leifer extradited from Israel to face child abuse charges | ABC News

Australia’s former ambassador to Israel believes the ongoing fight to extradite former Melbourne school principal Malka Leifer to face sexual abuse charges is straining relations between the two countries.

Ms Leifer’s fight against extradition proceedings has dragged on for five years with her lawyers claiming she’s mentally unfit to travel from Israel.

She’s facing 74 charges of sexual abuse relating to her time as headmaster of the ultra-orthodox Adass Israel school in Melbourne between 2001 and 2008.

Former ambassador Dave Sharma is now a Liberal MP and has joined forces with Labor member Josh Burns and two of Ms Leifer’s alleged victims to demand a ramping up of diplomatic pressure against Israel.
