This is part 1 of a 2 part mini series with part 2 to follow next Sunday. I was researching the nutrition Chris Froome used to break away and stay away on Stage 19 of the 2018 Giro d’Italia, and discovered that prior to this he had completed a 9 day training & nutrition block during the same Grand Tour, in order to get down to his ideal climbing weight ahead of the mountain stages in the final week. Digging deeper I discovered Chris and his team had targeted a very big calorie deficit over this 9 day block in order to hit his ideal weight – and I felt that this part of his 2018 Giro d’Italia story was very impressive in it’s own right, demonstrating the determination and mindset of a champion.
So I decided to replicate both his diet and cycling activity for just 1 day, in order to get a small understanding as to what this training block entailed, and his huge strength of character. It also sets the scene for the contrasting second part of this mini series where I replicate the nutrition (lots and lots of carbs!!) and energy expenditure required for Chris to win Stage 19 and secure The Maglia Rose (Pink Jersey).
